Rootie's
temperament is quiet, however she is inquisitive. Her curiosity has
led her into a
couple of
precarious situations. I'm thankful only one of her encounters has
left a visible
scare, reminding me
of God's grace on our herd. These young does can indeed raise our
heart
rates as they
explore their surroundings, tasting and trying everything that catches
their eye
and young
imaginations.
Rootie's mammary is
quite nice. It's a strong mammary system. However, I was out of
town when Rootie
freshened with a single buck kid. The kid was left on her while I was
out of
town. Being a
single buck kid, he chose to nurse only off one side, and in turn,
unfortunately
effected the
production on one side for this lactation. Since we haven't dam raised
this is a new
experience for me. I assume, from talking with others, this shouldn't
effect
next year's
production on the side that wasn't nursed on for a week. We were able
to bring
her side that was
not nursed, back into production. However not up to the same
productivity
as the side her
buckling nursed from. I trust she will freshen even in the spring to
be a
formidable
competitor in the show ring.
Rootie is easy to milk and has been quite
productive in spite of the uneven balance in her
mammary. I love
this young doe.
